I have an instance where a web site is failing to generate thumbnail images with an error of "Couldn't recognize the file type", but the sample Frame Grabber vb application opens the file just fine & generates the bmp images properly. The mpeg in question is approx 285mb in size, the system has 756mb ram.
What can I do to try & resolve this?

This turned out to be an apparent memory leak issue someplace - when the server was rebooted, the embedded ASP code started to work properly again.
