Resize Images Before Upload

One key feature of Aurigma Image Uploader is its ability to resize photos before they're uploaded to a website. This allows you to increase the upload speed and reduce server load. Resized copies are prepared simultaneously to the upload process and therefore the resize performance has almost no influence for the overall upload speed.

Let's examine a few different scenarios:

Upload resized pictures
All vendors of digital cameras are pursuing each other in a megapixel chase. Even the cheapest cameras produce photos of at least 8 megapixels. In other words, each photo shot with such a camera will use about 3 Mb. However when people share pictures through the web, 640x480 photos are usually more than enough. So it's important to resize these 8 Mpix photos to 640x480 before they are sent to a website. This can increase upload speed by several tens of times and reduce the amount of inbound traffic. With Aurigma Image Uploader you can upload resized pictures instead of original files to achieve this effect.

Upload thumbnails along with original files
Although the ability to resize images before upload is a handy feature, sometimes you need to upload original photos. But in most situations you still need to have a thumbnail to display an image to users before they download the original file. Without Aurigma Image Uploader, you would need to generate it on a server. Fortunately, with Image Uploader you do not have to spend server computing resources to create thumbnails - you can generate it before upload and send it along with the original file!

Upload multiple resized copies of different sizes per each photo
Another scenario is when you want to upload multiple picture dimensions at once. For example, you create a photo hosting website and want to display albums created by your users in three modes: thumbnail view (thumbnail size limited by 100x100), film strip view (320x240 photo + ribbon of thumbnails), and individual large photo (800x600 image). With Image Uploader you can create as many resized copies as you want and send them to your website.

Note

There is a limitation for dimensions of the output resized copy in Image Uploader Flash (3 Mpix), Image Uploader Express (3 Mpix), Image Uploader Professional (5 Mpix). If you need to upload resized copies of higher resolution, consider Image Uploader Print.

Fit Modes

Photos uploaded by users come in various dimensions. That's why setting specific widths and heights can break their aspect ratio. To avoid this, Aurigma Image Uploader does not resize images exactly to the specified output dimensions, but instead interprets them according to the fit mode. It can fit the image to specified width and height in three ways:

  • Proportionally resize the image to fit it within a specified rectangle.
  • Proportionally resize the image to have a specified width.
  • Proportionally resize the image to have a specified height.

Note, the image is resized only if its dimensions exceed the specified ones. If the image is smaller than you need, the original file will be sent.
